Sexually transmitted disease – Signs and Symptoms

Chlamydia: Painful urination, Lower abdominal pain, Vaginal discharge in women, Discharge from the penis in men, Pain during sexual intercourse in women, Testicular pain in men.

Trichomoniasis: Greenish yellow, possibly frothy vaginal discharge, Strong vaginal odor, Vaginal itching or irritation, Pain during sexual intercourse, Painful urination, Light vaginal bleeding.

Genital herpes: itching or tingling sensations in the genital or anal area, small fluid-filled blisters that burst leaving small painful sores, pain when passing urine over the open sores (especially in women), headaches, backache, flu-like symptoms, including swollen glands or fever.

Genital warts: They can appear on the skin anywhere in the genital area as small whitish or flesh-coloured bumps, or larger, fleshy, cauliflower-like lumps. They are unlikely to cause pain but may itch and can be difficult to spot.

Gonorrhea: Thick, cloudy or bloody discharge from the penis or vagina, Pain or burning sensation when urinating, Frequent urination,Pain during sexual intercourse.

Hepatitis B: flu-like symptoms, such as tiredness, general aches and pains, headaches and a high temperature of or above 38C (100.4F), loss of appetite and weight loss, feeling sick, being sick, diarrhoea, pain in your upper right-hand side, yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).

Syphilis: Painless ulcers  appear at the effected area on body, this will be 21 days after sexual contact with an infected person.

    • On the vulva (outside the vagina) or on the cervix (neck of the womb) in women.
    • On the penis in men.

Around the anus and mouth (both sexes).

HIV: Fever, Headache, Sore throat, Swollen lymph glands, Rash, Fatigue.

if you think you have symptoms of a STI, you should have a STI check up at the nearest GUM clinc or doctors.

even if you have no symptoms but are sexual active, a check up every so often is essential.

you must also tell your sexual partner about any infections you have, so they can get checked aswell.
